Sforzando Piano Studio’s namesake derives from an Italian musical term that directs a note or chord to be played with a strong emphasis or accent.  The name is a reflection on the studio’s students and their musical journey.  Whether it is the daily practice, competitions, or recitals, I hope that the students of Sforzando Piano studio will make a strong impression and emphasis in the lives of the people that surround them through their musical arts.

Students of Sforzando Piano Studio will be eligible to participate in all Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) events, ABRSM examinations, and other festivals/competitions.  In addition, all students will have the opportunity to participate in master classes, chamber ensembles, and annual recitals.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe that education goes beyond the classroom to the extent that we can use tools from dissimilar subjects to further our learning. For example, I draw my teaching philosophy for music from my love for literature. With each novel, play, or short story that I read, it is imperative that I ask myself the famous who, what, when, where, and why questions. Without the answers to these vital questions, reading such novel, play, or short story would be an act of squandering these treasured works.

Therefore, if a literary advocate is always seeking out the “who, what, when, where, and why,” then I believe the same passion for discovery and inquiry can and should be applied to music. Students should always seek out why each piece in his or her repertoire is written the way that it is. Through an inquisitive approach to learning a piece of music, students are not only skimming on the surface, but also excavating newfound truths and realizations.

With my beginner students, I strive to build a strong musical foundation that consists of ear training, sight-reading, technique, musicianship, improvisation, harmonization, etc.  I believe that a strong musical foundation is the core to any successful musician.  With my vast knowledge, I feel competent that I can help any beginner or intermediate student to achieve excellence in their piano studies.  Regarding advanced students, I realize that I am not a walking encyclopedia, and therefore I cannot offer the answers and solutions that students may stumble upon at any given time.  However, I believe that my job as a piano teacher to advanced students is to serve as a guide – gently leading my students to the correct path so they can uncover music at various depths according to their own musical development.

Ultimately, in my piano teaching, I always am determined to make sure that my students are enjoying themselves.  As Sergei Rachmaninoff once said, “Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music.”
